I am not sure if it because of Christmas season approaching quickly or maybe because of work I wasn’t paying attention, a lot of interesting concerts and performances are now on in Malta.
Last week a friend of us convinced to go out and we ended up at the concert of “The Boston Boys” in Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. It was quite a sacrifice because it was raining dogs and cats and very windy. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately , the hall wasn’t sold us so we were upgraded to better tickets as the balcony was closed. The band performed an interesting mix of jazz, soul, and word music along with few songs with our own Maltese guys from Band Brothers. It was a really nice experience although I think this sort of music would be more suitable for a nice, quiet jazz club where you can enjoy a glass of wine or if you feel energised enough, you can dance as well.
This weekend I am going to hear Four Seasons by Piazzolla and Carmen Suite by Bizet in Floriana performed by Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Nadia Debono as a soloist. Piazzolla has been one of my favourite contemporary composer for many years. I have played a lot of his works for piano solo and for piano trio- the 4 seasons including and I always loved his emotional and passionate music. Sometimes a bit depressing though but maybe my Slavic soul reverberates with it.
Next week you can have a chance of hearing two concerts fully spotlighting opera. Next Friday there is a first concert by Teatru Manuel Youth Opera of which I am a member, so this is a bit of self-promotion. If you have time on Friday 13th December , come and join us in the courtyard of Manuel Theatre to hear most of the arias and duets from Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart. I will be one of the pianist on that night.
The next day, on Saturday 14th, there is a Viva Verdi concert commemorating Verdi’s bicentenary anniversary of birth. It will include Malta Philharmonic Orchestra along with some local opera performers. Unfortunately, I will be missing this one due to the flight to Poland but if you have a chance to hear it, I think it is worth it.
Enjoy the festive season and go and hear some great performers and concerts planned for us this December!
