Chiemsee- traveling by boat, train, bus and steam train

image

Chiemsee is one of the largest lakes in Bavaria, called also a Bavarian sea. To get there we had to take the train to Rosenheim, change to take a train to Priem am Chiemsee, get on the steam train and finally a boat to get to one of the islands on the lake.

There are two islands there-  Herreninsel and Fraueninsel. On each of them there were male and female monasteries, though the names. On Herreninsel one can find a castle or palace designed by Bavarian King Mad Louis. The whole mansion is inspired by French Sun King and is also devoted to him. One can find many portraits of Sun Kings, his typical designs and colours. Unfortunately, the whole project was very expensive and the King run out of the money before finalising it. Visitors can see the few completed rooms, as well as the part which was not finished at all. Unfortunately, like in many museums, you cannot take pictures at all and it is a shame as the interiors are incredible. Full of luxurious materials and exotic designs.

The other island Fraueninsel requires another boat trip and then you are on a tiny island with an artistic feel. You can find there artists studios, restaurants and cafes.
